Groom hair physics makes hair weird and stretchy - Rendering

My groom hair looks like this but when I put it in the level and turn on physics, it becomes this. I know I have to adjust a few settings but nothing this horrendous should be happening I saw this being a problem somewhere but forgot. I hope somebody smarter than me can understand what in the frickity frack is going on
